The uncharitable hedging at the heart of same-sex blessings

Fiducia supplicans, the Vatican document that granted permission to Catholic priests to bestow blessings upon same-sex couples, is flawed for several reasons. For one thing, it assumes that people who are living in same-sex relationships cannot do otherwise. But the Church has always held that charity, the document’s ostensible aim, entails speaking the truth about sin. This is a problem for Fiducia supplicans, and the solution it offers amounts to a rhetorical expedient, a distinction without a difference – and demonstrates the failure of its charitable aim.
