Pope Francis recently met with more than 100 comedians from around the world, not a few of whom wondered why they’d been asked. Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Seinfeld fame said, “I don’t know, I found the whole thing so bizarre.” Conan O’Brien said he was perplexed at why comedians had been invited, saying, “Most of my career has been me saying, why am I here?” Pope Francis told the assembled comics that it’s possible to “laugh at God,” saying, “this is not blasphemy” but involves teasing God “just as we play and joke with the people we love.”
